What is ORB Strategy?

The Opening Range Breakout (ORB) is a time-tested day trading strategy used by professional traders to capture directional momentum established during the first 30-60 minutes of the trading session.

Core Concept The market "decides" its direction during the opening range. Once price breaks out of this range with confirmed momentum, we trade in that direction with institutional precision.

Key Parameters:

Dashboard Elements:

ORB High/Low: Exact levels defining your opening range for the day

Volume OK: YES = Volume spike confirmed | NO = Wait for confirmation

Volatility OK: YES = ATR expansion confirmed | NO = Low momentum

Position: Current trade status (FLAT, LONG, or SHORT)

How The Strategy Works

Phase 1: ORB Formation (Yellow Background)

⏰ Time: 9:30 - 10:00 AM ET (Default)
The market establishes its opening range. Price oscillates between high and low as institutions build positions. DO NOT TRADE DURING THIS PERIOD. Watch and let the range form completely.

Phase 2: Breakout Detection

🎯 Entry Trigger After ORB period ends, the indicator monitors for price to break above ORB High (BUY) or below ORB Low (SELL) with confirmed momentum.

Phase 3: Momentum Confirmation

ALL conditions must be met for a signal:

  1. Price breaks ORB level (High for long, Low for short)
  2. Volume Spike: Current volume > 1.5x 20-period average
  3. Volatility Expansion: Current ATR > 1.2x average ATR

Phase 4: Trade Management

βœ… Auto-Calculated Levels Red Line: Stop Loss (ORB opposite boundary)
Green Line: Take Profit (Risk:Reward ratio applied)
Position size based on your risk tolerance

Professional Trading Guidelines

🎯

One Trade Per Day

The best ORB setups occur once daily. Take the first quality breakout and walk away. Overtrading destroys profitability.

🚫

No Setup = No Trade

If volume or volatility doesn't confirm, skip it. Missing a trade beats losing on a fakeout. Patience is profit.

πŸ“°

Avoid News Events

Never trade FOMC (2PM ET), NFP (8:30 AM ET Fri), or major geopolitical events. News destroys technical setups.

πŸ’°

Risk Small

Risk only 1-2% per trade. With 50% win rate and 2:1 R/R, you're mathematically profitable. Survival first.

🧘

No Revenge Trading

If stopped out, stop for the day. Emotional trading kills edge. Tomorrow brings fresh setups.

πŸ“…

Avoid Monday/Friday

Mondays: Weekend gap risk. Fridays: Low volume chop. Trade Tuesday-Thursday for best probability.

⏰

Time Window

Best trades: 10:00-11:30 AM ET. After 12:00 PM, momentum dies. Never hold ORB trades overnight.

πŸ“Š

Liquid Markets Only

Trade ES, NQ, GC, CL, EUR/USD. Avoid thin markets where breakouts fail and slippage kills profits.

⚠️ Skip The Trade If:

  • ORB range >2x ATR (indicates indecision)
  • Multiple false breakouts in 15 minutes (chop zone)
  • VIX spiking >25 (panic mode)
  • Pre-market moved >1% (exhausted)
  • Major earnings same day (AAPL, MSFT, etc.)
